Atom was a free, open-source text editor developed by GitHub, built on the Electron framework and designed around hackability — the idea that any developer should be able to customize every aspect of their editor. It offered a rich package ecosystem, built-in Git integration, and a modern interface that made it highly popular among developers from its launch in 2014 until GitHub sunset it in December 2022.

Atom featured a deeply customizable environment where themes, packages, and key bindings could all be modified or replaced. Atom archives are preserved for users who prefer its workflow.
